Windows: QuickTime 3 Developer Preview Release Read Me The QuickTime 3 Developer Preview Release installer encompasses digital media technology from Apple. On Windows the installer includes: With one installer you will now get everything you need for a complete digital media experience. WARNING: This software is not a final product. The goal is to get feedback on the functionality. Please take the time to read all the instructions before downloading. If you are uncomfortable using development software, please use the officially released versions of QuickTime at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/sw/sw3.html . IMPORTANT: Windows 3.1 is supported by the officially released version of QuickTime for Windows 2.1.2 at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/sw/qtwin.html . Before You Download * Before you download or use this developer preview software, here are a few important things to know: To find out important information about the software refer to: Known Issues at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/preview/info/known.htm . Things You Should Know at : http://www.apple.com/quicktime/preview/info/general.htm General information you need to know when using QuickTime. * The software is subject to the terms and conditions detailed in the license agreement that accompanies the software. * Preview means that the product is still under development and can contain bugs. We welcome your feedback on the product, but please be advised that we can not provide support on beta software. * The software has a time-out feature so that it expires after a certain period of time. The purpose of the time-out is to ensure that you remember to come back and get the latest software release. Time out for this release is April 6, 1998. * Ensure that you follow the installation instructions provided here. * Depending on net-site traffic, you could experience delays when trying to download the preview software. The amount of time it takes you to download the preview software depends on the speed of your connection to the Internet. * This software is not for distribution with any product. System Requirements * Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 * 486DX 100 MHz or higher is recommended * 16MB RAM * Sound Blaster Compatible Card * Installation of Direct X version 3.0 or higher is recommended * Installation of DirectDraw and DirectSound drivers is recommended. Get Your DirectX Drivers QuickTime can take advantage of DirectDraw and DirectSound. It is important for you to have the latest drivers for your video and sound cards. 2. Double-click on the .exe file to launch the installer. 3. You are asked to confirm the installation of QuickTime 3. Click on the Yes button. 4. The installer is launched and the files extracted. 5. The Setup Screen appears with the QuickTime Penguin. Click on the Next button. 6. The General Information Screen appears. Click on the Next button. 7. The Software License agreement appears. Click Yes if you agree to the terms. 8. A default Full Install is selected and the default destination directory selected is C:\Program Files\QuickTime. Click on the Next button. 9. The searches your computer for Internet Browsers and the default Plug-in folder is selected for the installation of the QuickTime Plugin. Click on the Next button. 10. The Create or Select Program Folder Screen appears for installation in the Start menu. The default program directory is QuickTime. Click on the Next button. 11. Setup is run and the files are installed. Click on the Finish button. 12. The Sample Movie and the Read Me are opened. Providing Feedback and Getting Help There are three ways to provide feedback and/or get assistance with QuickTime: QuickTime 3 Feedback E-Mail Address Throughout the duration of the QuickTime 3 Preview Release, a special e-mail address will be active (qt3beta@apple.com). You may use this address to send suggestions and comments and to report any problems you have encountered while using the preview release of QuickTime 3. All e-mail sent to qt3beta@apple.com will be reviewed by the QuickTime engineering team. Note : Due to the large quantity of e-mail expected, we cannot guarantee an individual response to every e-mail. When reporting a problem, please be sure to include the information outlined below. Without this information, it may be impossible to investigate your problem. Reporting a Problem on Windows 95 or Windows NT When you run the QuickTime installer for Windows a system configuration utility called qtinfo.exe is placed in the c:\QuickTime directory. You need to run this utility and include the file with your feedback. Instructions for running the utility are provided below. Run the qtinfo.exe. It is located in the QuickTime Folder.
2. Click with the right mouse button on the Menu bar. 3. Select Save Log... from the pop-up menu. 4. You will be prompted to save a file. The file entitled qtinfo.txt will be saved to disk. 5. This text file now contains the configuration information for your system that is essential to assisting you. Apple has created two electronic mailing lists that support the open exchange of ideas and experiences within the community of QuickTime software developers. As a member of one of the electronic list services, you are able to submit questions to the other list participants and can respond to the questions and comments others submit. These electronic forums are an excellent way to learn from your peers and to share experiences with the community of developers who are also interested in QuickTime-related matters. About Roland's Sound Set for General MIDI and GS Format This release of QuickTime includes an instrument sound set licensed by Roland Corporation that makes a complete General MIDI compatible sound set. It also includes additional sounds necessary to make a complete GS Format compatible sound set. What is the GS Format? The GS Format is a standardized set of specifications for sound sources that defines the manner in which multitimbral sound generating devices will respond to the MIDI messages. The GS Format also complies with the General MIDI System Level - 1. The GS Format also defines a number of other details over and above the features of General MIDI. These include unique specifications for sound and functions available for tone editing, effects, and other specifications concerning the manner in which sound sources will respond to MIDI messages. Any device that is equipped with GS Format sound sources can faithfully reproduce both General MIDI sound recordings and GS Format MIDI sound recordings.
