TOPIC

What's the hard drive RPM on the G3 computers? I need 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute) for graphics processing.

DISCUSSION

While the Power Macintosh G3 Mini-tower computers come equipped with video capture capabilities, they are not necessarily professional quality AV computers. Apple provides the base feature sets and allows advanced feature requirements to be provided by third parties.

It should be understood, that while RPM speed may be important, it is not especially relevant when determining whether a computer will support graphics processing. RPM speed simply does not guarantee a drive's performance.

While some third-party developers may specify RPM as a AV requirement, what matters is throughput rate and seek time.

The EIDE drives used in the G3 series of Power Macintosh computers will have equal or better performance than the specifications stated for these products.

Currently, Apple's minimum specifications for EIDE devices are 15 ms access time and 8 MB/sec maximum throughput.
