DISCUSSION

What's new in Open Transport 1.3 - General
Open Transport now supports TCP/IP configurations that use single-link multihoming (at the same time). Using this feature, it is now possible to configure Open Transport to assign multiple IP addresses to a single ethernet card. New versions of server applications may be required to take advantage of this capability and you will need to contact the developer of your server software for more information about whether a given product can utilize this feature. Additional information about how to enable and configure this feature is included in the OT 1.3 Technical Info document.

Performance should be improved on systems used as web servers. Open Transport now includes a change to TCP that improves performance with small TCP transactions. The default behavior for TCP is this case is to hold off on the 2nd packet until either an acknowledgment is received for the first packet, or there is enough outgoing data queued up for an MTU sized packet. Open Transport/TCP has been changed to immediately send out both packets.

Open Transport serial was updated to improve accuracy in software components where the list of available serial ports is displayed. With earlier releases, conditions could occur where the Modem control panel or Mac OS 8 Internet Assistant would not display correct information about the list of available serial ports if a PC Card Modem had recently been ejected on a PowerBook. Open Transport now correctly notifies applications if a PC Card Modem is ejected.

Open Transport was changed to fix a problem where serial ports were sometimes not recognized properly. This was most notably a problem with the Global Village Platinum Pro PC Card and the symptom was getting a "Serial port in use" error when trying to connect with the PPP or Remote Access control panel.

Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented ARA 3.0 from properly setting the default zone (the zone that is automatically selected in the Chooser).

A bug fix was made to avoid errors on systems using multiple ARA 3.0 Personal Servers on the same network where Open Transport would incorrectly report that an IP address was already in use. This only occurred if the PPP Client was configured with a manually assigned IP address. Error reporting is also improved for this scenario.

This release includes multiple fixes to improve compatibility, performance and stability on servers using AppleShare IP 5.0.2.

Additional bug fixes are included to the Open Transport/AppleTalk component that will benefit Open Transport Ready and Open Transport Enhanced applications that use the AppleTalk Data Stream Protocol (ADSP) or Printer Access Protocol (PAP).

Resources were added to the Open Transport Control Panels and Shared Libraries to provide more informative text in the "Show Item Information" field in Extensions Manager 4.0 and Conflict Catcher.

CFM 68k is now officially supported for use by developers.

Several enhancements were made to further improve compatibility with MDEVs used by some 3rd party SLIP and PPP software packages and AOL. In some configurations with previous releases of Open Transport only the first MDEV was loaded correctly.

The correct LocalTalk drivers are now installed on all systems to which are compatible with version 2.1 of the Apple LocalTalk Bridge and Apple LaserWriter Bridge software.

    Network interface Options
Open Transport 1.3 supports PCI bus, NuBus, communications slot, and PC Card network interface cards, as well as built-in LocalTalk, Ethernet, and Token Ring network adapters. For supported computers without expansion options, Open Transport 1.3 also supports a SCSI-attached network adapter. Third party network interface options available for Open Transport include Fast Ethernet, ATM, and FDDI.

    General compatibility
    Open Transport is compatible with:
    • existing applications that use AppleTalk as specified by Apple Computer, Inc.
    • existing applications that use MacTCP as specified by Apple Computer, Inc.
    • existing devices (such as printers) that you select in the Chooser
    • existing NuBus network interface cards for the Mac OS
Computers running Open Transport can be added to an existing AppleTalk or TCP/IP network without upgrading other computers on the network.

    Apple Product Compatibility Update
At Ease version 2.x or 3.x may encounter problems when starting up with Open Transport. At Ease Update 1.0 will update non-Workgroup
versions of At Ease 2.x or 3.x to include Open Transport compatibility. If you are using At Ease for Workgroups, you should upgrade to version
3.0.2 or later. Both can be found on Apple Software Update sites on the Internet and selected online services.

The Apple PCI Token Ring Card (M3904Z/A) works with Open Transport 1.1.1 and later. The Apple PCI Token Ring card is compatible with Power Macintosh 7200/120, 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600 computers; it is not compatible with 7200/75 and 7200/90 computers; it is not compatible with systems with processors faster than 150 Mhz. Please see the Apple Technical Info Library
< http://www.info.apple.com > for the most up-to-date information about Apple Token Ring card compatibility.

Apple LaserWriter Bridge and LocalTalk Bridge 2.1 or later are compatible with Open Transport.

Apple Remote Access (ARA) Multiport Server 2.1, ARA Multiport Server PCI version 2.1.1, ARA Client 2.0.1 and later, and ARA Personal Server 2.0.1 and later are compatible with Open Transport 1.1 and later.

Apple PCI-based Workgroup servers (Application, AppleShare, and Internet) are compatible with Open Transport 1.1 or later.

Computers running the current versions of Apple IP Gateway and AppleTalk Internet Router must not be updated to Open Transport; these products are based on classic networking. These products do, however, interoperate with computers using either classic or Open Transport networking. Apple has not yet announced plans regarding future versions of these products.

Apple's MacTCP Ping is not fully compatible with Open Transport; no update is planned.

Open Transport-compatible alternatives: ZapTCP is a classic networking tool and is neither compatible nor needed with Open Transport. Functionality similar to ZapTCP is built into Open Transport.

    Dialup Network Connectivity - AppleTalk
For dialup connectivity to AppleTalk networks, Open Transport supports Apple Remote Access version 2.0.1 or later.

Native Dialup Network Connectivity - AppleTalk
Open Transport supports extensions that use the STREAMS architecture. For dialup connectivity to AppleTalk networks, Apple Remote Access version 3.0 offers access either using the AppleTalk Remote Access Protocol (ARAP) or the Point to Point Protocol (PPP). ARA 3.0 is available in retail packages in a Client and Personal Server version.

    Dialup Network Connectivity - TCP/IP
For dialup connectivity to TCP/IP networks (including the Internet) Open Transport supports third-party extensions known as "MDEVs". Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP) and Point to Point Protocol (PPP) connectivity are provided in this manner. Not all versions of all MDEVs are compatible with Open Transport 1.1 and later.

Open Transport 1.1 and later recognizes and is compatible with the following MDEVs. When properly installed they appear in the ³Connect via² pop-up menu in the TCP/IP control panel.

FreePPP - version 1.0.5 or later-

FreePPP versions prior to 2.5 may experience problems when running with virtual memory turned on (including RAM Doubler). If you have problems using FreePPP with VM, either update to FreePPP 2.5, or temporarily turn VM off. The current version of FreePPP is 2.5v3. The FreePPP home page provides the latest information about FreePPP at < http://www.rockstar.com/ppp.shtml >.

MacPPP - version 2.1.4 or later-
(MacPPP 2.5 or later is recommended) MacPPP versions prior to 2.5 may experience problems when running with virtual memory turned on (including RAM Doubler). If you have problems using MacPPP with VM, either update to MacPPP 2.5, or temporarily turn VM off. An Open Transport-compatible version of MacPPP (MacPPP 2.5) is included in the Open Transport Extras folder. For more information, please refer to the MacPPP Read Me document.
