TOPIC

Customers may call in asking if they can use page sizes or paper that is not listed in the Page Setup for their LaserWriter. Is this possible?

DISCUSSION

Apple LaserWriter printers do not support custom page or paper sizes.

If a customer cannot get the size that they want to show up in the Page Setup dialog box check the following:

    1) Make sure the customer has the correct PPD (printer description) file chosen for their LaserWriter. This can be checked by selecting the printer in the Chooser and clicking on the 'Setup' button. Some LaserWriters support more paper sizes than others.

    2) Open the Page Setup dialog box and click on the 'dogcow' picture. The page dimensions and imaginable area for the selected page size will be shown. Have the customer select different page sizes from the page size menu. Show the customer how they can see all the available page dimensions. If the page size they need is not listed there, then their LaserWriter does not support it.

LaserWriter drivers up to 8.4.3 and also LaserWriter 8.5.1 do support custom page sizes, but only when the output device does. This will typically be used to print to a high quality imagesetter. Apple LaserWriters do not support this.

Note: LaserWriter 8.4.x does not support custom page sizes at all, regardless of the output device.
