TOPIC

    Name: ARA 3.0.1 Client Updater

    Version: n/a

    Released: August 19, 1998

    Requires:
A PowerBook G3 Series and ARA 3.0. It is not supported on any other Macintosh, including the older PowerBook G3. The PowerBook G3 Series computers have a large white Apple logo near the middle of the top cover and the product label on the bottom of the PowerBook will list the following family number: M4753

    Description:
Updates ARA 3.0 to 3.0.1 on a PowerBook G3 Series computer. After a PowerBook G3 Series computer is brought out of sleep mode, it will not successfully connect to a remote access server using ARAP. The modem will dial and establish a connection but the connection never gets beyond the status message which states "Starting ARAP..." The connection will eventually time out with an alert. The connection attempt can also be terminated using the Cancel button. This only occurs on the PowerBook G3 Series computers after they have been put into sleep mode. Once the PowerBook has been put into sleep mode, it must be restarted in order to make ARAP connections. This problem does not occur with ARA 2.1. This software prevents this problem from occurring with ARA 3.0.

    Instructions:
This software consists of a self-mounting Disk Copy compressed image (.smi) file. Download this software to your hard drive and then double-click it to use it. You do not need Disk Copy to access .smi files.

DISCUSSION

ARA 3.0.1 Client Updater for PowerBook G3 Series

    Important:
This updater is for use only on the PowerBook G3 Series. It is not supported on any other Macintosh, including the older PowerBook G3. The PowerBook G3 Series computers have a large white Apple logo near the middle of the top cover and the product label on the bottom of the PowerBook will list the following family number: M4753

    Problem Description:
The PowerBook G3 Series computers are bundled with Apple Remote Access 3.0 Client software (ARA 3.0 Client). This software combines the functionality of the previous ARA 2.1 product (used for AppleTalk connections) and OT/PPP (used for TCP/IP connections).

The following problem has been discovered when using ARA 3.0 on a PowerBook G3 Series computer.

Connections made via PPP will work whether the PowerBook has been put to sleep or not.

Updating the ARA 3.0 Client :
The ARA 3.0.1 Client Updater fixes the problem described above. Apple recommends that all PowerBook G3 Series customers use this utility to update the ARA 3.0 Client.

Double click on the ARA 3.0.1 Client Updater. The updater will search for the appropriate files to update and list them in a window. Select the file "OpenTpt Remote Access" that resides in the Extensions folder inside the active System Folder and click on the Update button. After the update is complete the following message will be displayed: "The file has been successfully updated." The final step is to quit the updater utility.

The file "OpenTpt Modem" will be listed but does NOT need to be updated. Attempting to update this file will result in an error message stating "An error prevented the update from completing. Resource has been modified. (ALRT 10002)." The file will not be damaged.

In order to verify whether or not the ARA 3.0 Client has already been updated, open the Remote Access control panel and Get Info (using the Get Info command in the File menu). An updated client will display "Remote Access: 3.0.1".
