TOPIC

I noticed the iPrint SL has a serial port that connects to a StyleWriter. How does the Apple StyleWriter driver find the printer if the printer does not have a LocalTalk adapter? The driver will look for serial ports on the iMac, and they won't be there. Can I use other serial devices with this adapter?

DISCUSSION

Note: The iPrint adapters are a third-party product. Support for them is provided by Farallon Communications, Inc.

The iPrint SL differs from the iPrint LT in that the iPrint SL connects an iMac directly to a StyleWriter printer. In other words, you use an Ethernet cable to the adapter, then a serial cable to the StyleWriter. The LT, on the other hand, is simply a hardware Ethernet-to-Localtalk/PhoneNet adapter, performing much the same function as Apple's software LocalTalk Bridge control panel.

If the StyleWriter in question does not have the AppleTalk adapter, how does the Apple driver see it? Theoretically, the driver will look for serial ports (that it will not find), and over AppleTalk--and we just stipulated no AppleTalk adapter on the printer.

Farallon resolved this situation by building an AppleTalk adapter into the iPrint SL adapter. So, if the AppleTalk control panel is set to Ethernet, and the StyleWriter and iPrint adapter are all connected to the iMac, the StyleWriter driver will detect "Stylewriter Ethernet". This, of course, also means that the only serial devices which can be served by the iPrint SL adapter are Apple StyleWriter I and II, 1200, 1500, 2200, 2400, and 2500.
