TOPIC

iMac and G3 computers may initially be unable to see the local AppleTalk services on an Ethernet network. In the Chooser, zones may fail to appear, as well as printers and other workstations running filesharing or other AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) servers.

DISCUSSION

The software installation at the factory includes an AppleTalk Preferences file that includes network and node information. This network and node information may not be valid for your network, hence, AppleTalk services do not appear in the Chooser.

Particularly in a switched Ethernet environment, these systems may read in these 'hints' and believe that they are, for example, on network number 41201 and assigned node number 173. (The current values may be viewed in the Appletalk Control Panel by selecting 'User Mode' from the edit menu and selecting 'Advanced'.)

The solution is to close the control panel, throw away AppleTalk Preferences (found in the Preferences folder), and shut down the computer. On restart, immediately hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys; continue to hold these down until the computer has issued its startup chime a second time. Release the keys, and the system should start up normally, and correctly arbitrate a network number and node number.
