TOPIC

This article discusses how to configure your network to avoid the following issues:

    • Your server is crashing or unavailable
    • Workstations are freezing while connected to the server, or losing their connection to the server.

DISCUSSION

    On the server and workstations:

    1. Run Disk First Aid and any other diagnostic/repair utilities you may own to repair the hard disk.
    - If a repair utility reports a problem was fixed, continue to run it until it reports no problems found.
    - If the utilities are unable to repair the hard disk: backup and reformat your hard disk, then restore the software from the backup.

    2. Run an anti-virus utility - updated with the latest virus definitions - to check for and remove viruses.

    3. For computers running Mac OS 8.6 or earlier, uncheck "Remember recently used items" in the Apple Menu Options control panel.

    4. Move TCP/IP, AppleTalk preferences, and the AppleShare Prep file into the Trash and select "Empty Trash" from the Special menu. Reset PRAM and reconfigure AppleTalk and TCP/IP.

    5. Verify you are using a version of AppleShare client compatible with your OS. Use AppleShare client 3.8.1 on workstations using System 7.6 and above. To ascertain which client should be used, see:

Article 16145 : "AppleShare: Platforms & Mac OS Releases Supported"

This article lists all supported hardware, system software, and more for every AppleShare server and every client. This allows you to ensure you are using the correct version of software.

    6. Disable anti-virus extensions (for example, Virex 5.9) and troubleshoot other third party extensions.

    On the server:

    1. Update AppleShareIP to a version compatible with the operating system on the server.

    2. In the Energy Saver control panel, set the "Put the system to sleep when it's inactive for" and "Separate timing for hard disk sleep" sliders to "Never." Select "Server Settings" from the Preferences menu, and check "Restart automatically after a power failure," and "Never put the hard disk to sleep."

    3. In the General Controls control panel, uncheck "Warn me if the computer was shut down improperly."

    4. Turn off Virtual Memory if you have 64 MB or greater of RAM.

    5. Run ASIP First Aid to repair PDS and Users & Groups data files. If necessary, remove corrupt PDS and User & Groups data files and replace from a backup.

    6. If running MacOS 8.1, update to the LocalTalk PCI extension 1.2.

    7. In the TCP/IP control panel, select "User Mode..." from the Edit menu, and set to "Advanced." Click the Options... button and uncheck "Load only when needed."

    8. If you are running System 7.x to MacOS 8.1 and ASIP 6.0, install the AppleShare Memory Manager INIT.

    9. If running other applications such as the mail server, adjust the processor slider to 90% or less.
