TOPIC

I cannot select View External Video Using: Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480) in the General Preferences as show on page 96 of the Final Cut Pro User's Manual.

However, my Power Macintosh G3 does recognize the FireWire camera using Apple System Profiler. How do I correct this?

DISCUSSION

First, you should make sure that your camera is tested and supported with Final Cut Pro. A list of FireWire cameras supported for use with Final Cut Pro can be found at: http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/techspecs/io.html

Final Cut Pro uses a unique set of extensions to communicate to FireWire cameras, besides the software installed with the Mac OS or QuickTime.

Final Cut Pro will install appropriate FireWire software following the steps outlined on page 19 of the Final Cut Pro user's manual.

The following extensions can be seen in the Extensions Manager control panel, when viewing items "as packages."

    QuickTime 4.0
    • QuickTime FireWire DV Enabler
    • QuickTime FireWire DV Support

    Final Cut Pro 1.0.1
    • FireWire Enabler
    • FireWire Support

Both sets of extensions must be present and enabled, the FireWire camera properly connected to the computer, and turned on prior to starting Final Cut Pro.

For more information on troubleshooting; see page 27 of the Final Cut Pro user's manual.
