TOPIC
What is the longest cable I can use to connect a peripheral to a USB-equipped Macintosh?
DISCUSSION The USB specification designates two types of devices, full-speed devices that communicate at 12 megabits per second (Mbps) and low-speed devices that communicate at 1.5 Mbps. The maximum cable length for a full speed device is 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the maximum cable length is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches). The cable length may be extended by daisy chaining a maximum of 5 hubs and cables together to provide a maximum combined length of 30 meters for full-speed devices and 27 meters for low-speed devices. For information on whether an USB device is a full-speed or low-speed device contact the manufacturer of the peripheral.
