TOPIC

This article describes the process for troubleshooting QuickTime 4 browser plug-ins.

DISCUSSION

Using the QuickTime Sample Movie with any browser is a good test for basic compatibility and functionality. This test should work on both Mac OS and Windows platforms. If this fails, try recopying the plug-in into the browser's plug-ins folder. If the issue is still unresolved, try reinstalling the browser and then perform basic extensions troubleshooting.

    Netscape Navigator and Communicator
Dragging the QuickTime Sample Movie into the browser window verifies the functionality of the browser plug-in. Netscape Navigator and Communicator display a broken plug-in icon when trying to view QuickTime content if there is a plug-in issue. If this process results in an error or the following dialogue box appears, then try the steps listed below.

      1. Quit the browser.
      2. Copy the QuickTime plug-in from the QuickTime folder into the Netscape Plug-ins folder.
      3. Reopen the browser.
      4. Drag the Sample Movie into the window.
      5. If this is ineffective, reinstall the browser and test again.

Also, perform extensions troubleshooting; restart to Mac OS ALL set. If this process fails, do a clean installation of the system software and browser software as a final test.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 and 4.5
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 and 4.5 give an error message, or do not display any graphic on the screen, or play audio. However, if you drag a movie file onto the browser window, it should open successfully in a new window. If it does not open, try these steps:
      1. Recopy the plug-in.
      2. Reinstall the browser.
      3. Troubleshoot extensions.
