    I purchased two Power Mac G4 (AGP) systems, both of which were equipped DVD-RAM drives. The drives seem to be slightly different; how I can tell whether both drives I received are DVD-RAM drives?


DISCUSSION

    There are two different versions of the DVD-RAM drive used in the Power Mac G4 (AGP) systems. Both have the same specifications, but were made by difference vendors. Since these drives were provided by different vendors, there are some slight differences.

    The main difference between these two drives is the tray (the slot the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or DVD-RAM disc is inserted into). The traditional tray, on the first revision of the DVD-RAM drive, has been turned into a slot, shown in figure 1 below.

    The traditional tray has returned on the second revision of the DVD-RAM drive (shown in figure 2 below), but has been modified slightly to enable it to accept the DVD-RAM cartridges.
