    When trying to use the Software Update control Panel, I get an alert sound with no message when I click Update Now, and the computer will not update.

DISCUSSION

    Verify that the Software Update Scheduler extension has not been disabled. Although you may not be scheduling automatic updates, the extension is required to manually or automatically update.
