When using Mac OS X Public Beta with a keyboard and operating system whose languages do not match, the username and password are not recognized when logging in the first time after installation.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

When using Mac OS X Public Beta with a keyboard and operating system whose languages do not match, the username and password are not recognized when logging in the first time after installation. An example would be using a United States keyboard with a German installation of Mac OS X Beta.

    Products affected

    • Mac OS X Public Beta

    Solution

After selecting an international keyboard in the setup assistant, Mac OS X Public Beta only recognizes a U.S. keyboard layout in the login dialog. After logging in as if with a U.S. keyboard layout, the international keyboard layout is recognized.

These steps allow Mac OS X Public Beta to recognize the correct keyboard layout in the login dialog:

      1. Log in with the user name "root" and the password belonging to the user who first set up the computer. Be sure to type as if using the U.S. keyboard layout.

      2. Open the System Preferences application.

      3. Click International.

      4. Click the Keyboard Menu tab.

      5. Click the checkbox to select a keyboard layout.

      6. Quit System Preferences

      7. Choose a keyboard layout from the menu bar. (The keyboard layout looks like flag.)

      8. Log out

Note: These steps must be completed each time Mac OS X Public Beta is reinstalled using an international keyboard.
