TOPIC

Differences between Open Transport 2.6 and Open Transport 2.5.x.

DISCUSSION

Open Transport 2.6 addresses several DHCP issues discovered in Open Transport 2.5.1 or 2.5.2. This includes all computers running Mac OS 9.0 as well as Power Macintosh G4, iBook, and iMac (Slot-loading) computers that came with Mac OS 8.6 and Open Transport 2.5.x pre-installed. Open Transport 2.6 is not supported on other computers running Mac OS 8.6 or on earlier versions of the Mac OS.

Open Transport 2.6 incorporates the function of the Open Transport Tuner 1.0. It turns off an option in Open Transport that would cause a Macintosh to respond to certain small network packets with a large Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packet. This prevents Macintosh computers from being used by third parties in certain types of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Since Open Transport incorporates this function, the Open Transport Tuner is no longer necessary, and the Open Transport 2.6 Installer will remove the Tuner extension.

Other issues addressed in Open Transport 2.6:
    • DHCP clients no longer "pause" when attempting to negotiate or renew DHCP lease.
    • DHCP leases with a renewal interval greater that one hour are now correctly renewed.
    • Improved compatibility with certain third-party ISDN routers.
    • Improved memory usage when DHCP lease is renewed.
    • Corrected a situation that could cause excessive network traffic if two machines on the same network are assigned the same IP address.
    • TCP/IP Preferences file now correctly reflects the state of a DHCP lease.
