DISCUSSION

When you choose Open Connection in a Communications document, you may see a "Port is not available" alert. This can happen if AppleTalk Remote or another Chooser device is keeping the serial port in use. To fix this, while this alert is visible, hold down the option key. The "Cancel" button will change to "Override". Click the Override button to disconnect the serial port from the other Chooser device and allow ClarisWorks to use it.

Another reason the serial port might be busy is that your modem is hooked up to the printer port and AppleTalk is active. With AppleTalk active, the printer port is an AppleTalk port not a serial port. Either switch your modem connection to the modem port (turn off your Macintosh first) or turn off AppleTalk in the chooser.
