DISCUSSION

Upon launch, all Claris applications scan installed fonts and build a Claris Fonts file which in turn creates a font menu where fonts appear in their native typeface (WYSIWYG). If one of these fonts happens to be damaged, Claris applications will freeze or hang at the opening splash screen.

Fonts should no longer cause crashes in ClarisDraw 1.0v1 and ClarisImpact 1.0v3 for Macintosh and PowerMacintosh systems, because there is code in these applications that tests for bad fonts when the application is first opened.

If ClarisImpact or ClarisDraw find a bad font, or one that cannot correctly be added to the Claris Fonts file, an alert is displayed indicating that some fonts may be bad. These fonts will be listed in a 'Bad Fonts' text file in the Claris Folder located inside your system folder. These fonts will also be displayed in Chicago font in the application's Font menus.

We suggest removing or replacing these fonts before using ClarisImpact. Refer to the manual that came with your Macintosh for instructions on how to remove or replace these fonts. Once these fonts have been removed or replaced, throw away the 'Claris Fonts' file, located in the Claris folder, and open ClarisImpact.

There may be some fonts that work properly in ClarisImpact and still fail our tests. The only difference between these and other fonts is that they will be displayed in Chicago font in the Font menu. However, we suggest performing the following simple tests on these fonts before using them in the application:
    1) Create some text in ClarisImpact and apply the font. If the application unexpectedly quits, this font is bad and should be removed or replaced immediately.
    2) If the application does not quit when the font is applied, create multiple pieces of text, apply several different font sizes, and print the file. If the font appears on screen and on paper correctly, then there is no need to replace or remove the font.

Note: If you receive a "Not Enough Memory" message when attempting to launch ClarisDraw, the first thing to check is the memory allocated to the program. However, if you are certain enough memory is allocated to the application and you are still not able to launch, it's likely that you have a corrupt font.
