The first release of the updater for ClarisDraw 1.0v2 corrupted files. This affected a relatively small number of people, but was very troublesome.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

In the Spring of 1995, an improper ClarisDraw 1.0v2 Updater was sent to approximately 140 ClarisDraw customers. This Updater created copies of ClarisDraw 1.0v2 that allowed people to edit their files once, but, after saving the file, would be corrupted and unopenable. If someone attempted to re-open the file they would see this error message:

"This is not a ClarisDraw file or it has been corrupted."

Fortunately, a fix has been found for these files, and it is quite simple. It requires a file editor such as the Norton Utilities application.

To fix the file using Norton Utilities:

- Copy the file to your hard disk
- Launch Norton Utilities
- From the UTILITIES menu, choose "Norton Disk Editor"
- Under "Choose a volume to Explore" select your hard disk
- Click "Open"
- Once the "Directory" opens, go to the FILE menu and choose "Open File"
- Find the corrupt file and click "Open Data Fork"
- When the data fork opens, go to the third byte (hit the right cursor key two times)
- Type b1
- Close the file, save changes to the sector

The file is now fixed.
