TOPIC

Rotated text is changed to a 72 dot per inch bit mapped image. Higher resolution can be achieved by creating the text in a paint document at 4 times the desired font size and pasting it in as an object and changing the frame resolution to 288 dpi.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

DISCUSSION

When text is rotated, it is converted to a 72 dot per inch bit mapped image. This looks very poor when printed on any high resolution printer, including PostScript printers printing at 300 dots per inch (dpi) and QuickDraw printers such as the StyleWriter which prints at 360 dpi.

A high resolution version of the rotated text can be created by typing the text in a paint document at 4 times the desired font size. Copy the text from the paint document and paste it into the draw or database document. Select Modify Frame from the Options menu and change the resolution to 288 dpi. This increases the resolution and decreases the size by a factor of four. The object can now be rotated and positioned. If a rotation of other than 90 degree increments is desired, then rotate the text in the paint document before copying. After pasting into the draw or database document, change the fill pattern to transparent and the line width to none. This will allow other objects to show through the large frame of the rotated text object and remove the black border from around the frame.
