ClarisDraw Important Information - 1.0v2
This file contains last-minute information that will help you get more from ClarisDraw. You will also find important tips in the "Troubleshooting" section of ClarisDraw's onscreen Help.
Hard Disk Space Needed During Installation
To save hard disk space, the "Easy install" option places all ClarisDraw files and only a minimal set of ClarisArt files on your hard disk. To install all of the ClarisArt files, relaunch the Installer, go to "Custom" install, and select the 'ClarisDraw ClarisArt' option.
During installation, ClarisDraw will temporarily require more hard disk space than it needs after installation is completed. This is because, during installation, the ClarisDraw Installer places compressed copies of the ClarisDraw files on the hard disk, then makes decompressed copies of these files. Once installation is successfully completed, the Installer automatically deletes the compressed files and leaves only the new, uncompressed files for your use.
Power Macintosh Installation
The "Easy Install" option places on your hard disk the appropriate Macintosh or Power Macintosh version of ClarisDraw, depending on the Macintosh being used. If you'd like to install both the Macintosh and Power Macintosh versions on any machine, use the following steps:
* Use the Easy Install option to install one complete set of files, then Quit the Installer.
* Open the 'ClarisDraw Folder' that was just installed and rename the ClarisDraw application appropriately (example: 'CD Macintosh' or 'CD Power Macintosh')
* Open the Installer a second time, choose "Custom" and select either 'ClarisDraw Application Macintosh' or 'ClarisDraw Application Power Macintosh', depending on the version previously installed.
When this installation is completed, both applications will be located in the same folder and will use the same auxiliary files.
Important: The Power Macintosh version will not run on a conventional Macintosh.
Memory
Occasionally in low memory situations an alert will appear stating "There is not enough memory to complete this operation". This is particularly common when working with paint frames, and is typical of any application with a paint feature. We suggest saving your document before continuing. If you are working with large documents and find yourself in this situation frequently, we suggest increasing the application's memory partition as described in the ClarisDraw onscreen help, or your Macintosh User's Guide.
Bad Fonts
ClarisDraw tests for bad fonts when the application is first opened. It also tests for bad fonts when opening the application after fonts have been added to your system. ClarisDraw creates a 'Claris Fonts' file which is used to display fonts in their actual typeface in the Font menu. If ClarisDraw encounters a bad font, or one that it cannot correctly add to the Claris Fonts file, an alert is displayed indicating that some fonts may be bad. These fonts will be listed in a 'Bad Fonts' text file in the Claris Folder, which is located in your System Folder. Additionally, these fonts will be displayed in the Chicago font in ClarisDraw's FONT menu. We suggest removing or replacing these fonts from your system before using ClarisDraw. Refer to the manual that came with your Macintosh for instructions on how to remove or replace these fonts. Once these fonts have been removed or replaced, throw away the 'Claris Fonts' file, also located in the Claris folder, and open ClarisDraw.
There may be some fonts that work properly in ClarisDraw and still fail our tests. The only difference between these and other fonts is that they will be displayed in the Chicago font in the FONT menu. However, we suggest performing the following simple tests on these fonts before using them in the application:
1) Create some text in ClarisDraw and apply the font. If the application unexpectedly quits, this font is bad and should be removed or replaced immediately.
2) If the application does not quit when the font is applied, create multiple pieces of text, apply several different font sizes, and print the file. If the font appears correctly on screen and when printed, then there is no need to replace or remove this font.
Exporting Documents with Bezigons Created from Text
If you create a document that includes bezigons created from text, and then save this document in EPSF, CGM, MacDraw Pro or MacDraw II format, you may see extra lines in the converted document, both onscreen and when printing. This is a limitation of Apple's "QuickDraw" object-drawing technology.
Opening or Saving Color Palettes
ClarisDraw ships with several specialized 256-color palettes. You can access these palettes by opening them from the "Colors & Gradients" dialog box in the LAYOUT menu. Make sure that you select the 256-color palette first; the "Open" and "Save" buttons will then become available.
Illuminated Letters Library
If your drawing includes objects from the Illuminated Letters library, and you need to scale these letters, for best results do not resize a letter by manually stretching it. If you do that, the letter or number background will scale accurately, but the enclosed letter or number will not because it is an actual piece of text. Instead, use the "Scale Selection" feature from the ARRANGE menu, with the "Scale text" option selected.
ClarisImpact Users:
If you own ClarisImpact, you can save a considerable amount of disk space by not installing the ClarisArt files for ClarisDraw. Both products include the same library files.
However, if you do install the ClarisArt libraries that come with ClarisDraw, to use them with ClarisImpact, you'll need to have ClarisImpact version 1.0v4 (or greater). Earlier versions of ClarisImpact cannot read library files in ClarisDraw's format.
If you own a version of ClarisImpact earlier than 1.0v4, contact Claris Customer Assistance for a maintenance release at (408) 727-8227, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Pacific time, Monday-Thursday (8 a.m.-2 p.m. Pacific time on Fridays). You'll also find this maintenance release on America Online, CompuServe, eWorld, AppleLink, and the Claris BBS (408-987-7421).
If you decide to use the same library set for ClarisDraw and ClarisImpact, remember that each application has certain kinds of objects that do not exist in the other. This can be a consideration under some circumstances.
For example, if you have text bound to a curve in ClarisDraw, and you then save that bound-text object to a library, if you open that library in ClarisImpact, the bound-text object will look the same, but if you ungroup it the text and the object it is bound to will all be separate objects. If you then save the library in ClarisImpact format and open it in ClarisDraw, you will not be able to unbind the text from the object. This is because the "Bind Text" feature is available in ClarisDraw, but not in ClarisImpact.
Similarly, if you place a "model" object from ClarisImpact into a library, then open that library in ClarisDraw, you will be able to place those objects into your document, but they will only be pictures - not the active models they are in ClarisImpact. This is because models are only available within ClarisImpact, not ClarisDraw. More importantly, if you modify the library and save it from within ClarisDraw, your models will look the same, but they will have lost their model functionality when you try to place them from the library into a ClarisImpact document. You'll be able to edit these objects with the drawing tools, but you won't be able to change them with the model tools. To avoid this, if you are using ClarisDraw and have opened a library containing ClarisImpact models, save any changes to a separate copy of the library. Use the "Save As" command under the Library's FILE menu.
ClarisDraw 1.0v2 Detailed Improvements
Claris periodically issues maintenance releases of shipping software applications. A maintenance release is identified by v2, v3, v4, etc. numbering. The improvements made in ClarisDraw 1.0v2 are included in this package and are detailed below.
Improved Translation of MacDraw Pro Files
* Text blocks import with correct size, and without wrapping
* Document size and page orientation information are properly imported
* Extremely fine pen sizes import at ClarisDraw's minimum available size, rather than being imported at a pen width of zero.
* MacDraw II and MacDraw Pro documents with rotated polygons import with all polygons accurately placed
* Objects in MacDraw Pro files opened in ClarisDraw for Power Macintosh print properly to Postscript printers.
* MacDraw Pro files containing PICT objects import completely and with correct size and proportion
Improved compatibility with ClarisImpact
* Imported ClarisImpact files retain correct ruler settings
* ClarisImpact files with rotated models, groups or tables import properly
* ClarisImpact files with all objects locked import properly
Import and Export Improvements
* Text in files saved as a PICT, then reopened and ungrouped, retains its proper color
* Pen size is properly translated when exported to CGM format
* Arrowheads properly export to CGM format
* Inappropriate "insufficient memory" error dialog eliminated when saving large PICT files as MacDraw II or MacDraw Pro.
* Resolution of bitmapped images properly preserved when exporting to MacDraw II or MacDraw Pro
* Black and white (one-bit) files export to EPSF with only the necessary information, so they remain reasonable in size

* QuickTime movies export properly
Improved Printing
* Print range settings work properly with slides and handouts
* Rotated, colored text prints properly with the Apple LaserWriter 7.x driver
* Polygons and bezigons print and display properly when exported or copied from ClarisDraw, then imported or pasted into other applications and printed to a Hewlett-Packard DeskWriter printer
System Conflict
* Memory is properly managed so closing Desk Accessories after use no longer causes a operating system conflict.
* Pop-up tools are now properly available when using System 7.1 on a Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic, PowerBook 100, or Portable
Miscellaneous
* The CommercialPi BT font displays correctly in the Font menu and in text
* ClarisDraw properly launches with a wider variety of corrupted fonts installed
* Proper line spacing is preserved even if a single line of text contains characters of varying point sizes, and line spacing is changed to a measurement other than Lines
