DISCUSSION

Question: Why are 68k versions of DataViz filters installed when installing to a computer with a PowerPC processor, even when selecting Custom Install and choosing "ClarisWorks for my system"?

Answer: The ClarisWorks Office installer works as designed, including installing the PowerPC-native version of the application on machines with PowerPC processors.

The installer installs the 68k version of the filters we have licensed from DataViz regardless of the machine's processor type. This is deliberate and is due to a problem with the Mac OS that can cause the PowerPC versions of DataViz's filters to crash the system.

Question: What should be done with the versions of the MacLinkPlus Setup Control Panel and MacLinkPlus extension that were previously installed with Mac OS/8? Should these be disabled in favor of the ClarisWorks pair or used in combination with them?

Answer: There is no need to do anything with any previously installed versions of the MacLinkPlus Control Panel or Extension in order for ClarisWorks Office to function properly. The Apple and Claris versions of these Control Panels have overlapping, but not identical settings. Each Control Panel can be used to change the settings unique to that Control Panel. For settings common to both, changes in either Control Panel will be be reflected in both and used by any application translating a file via a DataViz filter.

Question: What about the files in the DataViz folder within the System folder? Should they be merged with the files in the DataViz folder that is inside the Claris folder within the System folder?

Answer: In most cases, the number of filters provided from installations of MacLinkPlus or Mac OS/8 are larger than the subset of filters we have licensed and provide in the ClarisWorks Office installation. Therefore, it is not recommended to delete these filters as it could result in the loss of filters not provided in ClarisWorks Office. ClarisWorks translators are located within the Claris folder in the System folder, but other applications do not look in this location for translators. Therefore, previously installed DataViz translators, and the Claris translators, should be left in their original locations.
