DISCUSSION
This file contains last-minute information that will help you get more from ClarisDraw. You will also find important tips in the "Troubleshooting" section of ClarisDraw's onscreen Help. Hard Disk Space Needed During Installation To save hard disk space, the "Easy install" option places all ClarisDraw files and only a minimal set of ClarisArt files on your hard disk. To install all of the ClarisArt files, relaunch the Installer, go to "Custom" install, and select the 'ClarisDraw ClarisArt' option. During installation, ClarisDraw will temporarily require more hard disk space than it needs after installation is completed. This is because, during installation, the ClarisDraw Installer places compressed copies of the ClarisDraw files on the hard disk, then makes decompressed copies of these files. Once installation is successfully completed, the Installer automatically deletes the compressed files and leaves only the new, uncompressed files for your use. Power Macintosh Installation The "Easy Install" option places on your hard disk the appropriate Macintosh or Power Macintosh version of ClarisDraw, depending on the Macintosh being used. If you'd like to install both the Macintosh and Power Macintosh versions on any machine, use the following steps: * Use the Easy Install option to install one complete set of files, then Quit the Installer. * Open the 'ClarisDraw Folder' that was just installed and rename the ClarisDraw application appropriately (example: 'CD Macintosh' or 'CD Power Macintosh') * Open the Installer a second time, choose "Custom" and select either 'ClarisDraw Application Macintosh' or 'ClarisDraw Application Power Macintosh', depending on the version previously installed. When this installation is completed, both applications will be located in the same folder and will use the same auxiliary files. Important: The Power Macintosh version will not run on a conventional Macintosh (68K). Memory Occasionally in low memory situations an alert will appear stating "There is not enough memory to complete this operation". This is particularly common when working with paint frames, and is typical of any application with a paint feature. We suggest saving your document before continuing. If you are working with large documents and find yourself in this situation frequently, we suggest increasing the application's memory partition as described in the ClarisDraw onscreen help, or your Macintosh User's Guide. Bad Fonts ClarisDraw tests for bad fonts when the application is first opened. It also tests for bad fonts when opening the application after fonts have been added to your system. ClarisDraw creates a 'Claris Fonts' file which is used to display fonts in their actual typeface in the Font menu. If ClarisDraw encounters a bad font, or one that it cannot correctly add to the Claris Fonts file, an alert is displayed indicating that some fonts may be bad. These fonts will be listed in a 'Bad Fonts' text file in the Claris Folder, which is located in your System Folder. Additionally, these fonts will be displayed in the Chicago font in ClarisDraw's FONT menu. We suggest removing or replacing these fonts from your system before using ClarisDraw. Refer to the manual that came with your Macintosh for instructions on how to remove or replace these fonts. Once these fonts have been removed or replaced, throw away the 'Claris Fonts' file, also located in the Claris folder, and open ClarisDraw. There may be some fonts that work properly in ClarisDraw and still fail our tests. The only difference between these and other fonts is that they will be displayed in the Chicago font in the FONT menu. However, we suggest performing the following simple tests on these fonts before using them in the application: 1) Create some text in ClarisDraw and apply the font. If the application unexpectedly quits, this font is bad and should be removed or replaced immediately. 2) If the application does not quit when the font is applied, create multiple pieces of text, apply several different font sizes, and print the file. If the font appears correctly on screen and when printed, then there is no need to replace or remove this font. Exporting Documents with Bezigons Created from Text If you create a document that includes bezigons created from text, and then save this document in EPSF, CGM, MacDraw Pro or MacDraw II format, you may see extra lines in the converted document, both onscreen and when printing. This is a limitation of Apple's "QuickDraw" object-drawing technology. Opening or Saving Color Palettes ClarisDraw ships with several specialized 256-color palettes. You can access these palettes by opening them from the "Colors & Gradients" dialog box in the LAYOUT menu. Make sure that you select the 256-color palette first; the "Open" and "Save" buttons will then become available. Illuminated Letters Library If your drawing includes objects from the Illuminated Letters library, and you need to scale these letters, for best results do not resize a letter by manually stretching it. If you do that, the letter or number background will scale accurately, but the enclosed letter or number will not because it is an actual piece of text. Instead, use the "Scale Selection" feature from the ARRANGE menu, with the "Scale text" option selected. Claris periodically issues maintenance releases of shipping software applications. A maintenance release is identified by v2, v3, v4, etc. numbering. The improvements made in each new version are included in this package and are detailed below.
