TOPIC

After installing Mac OS 8.5, I have noticed that when I am in the Finder, none of the traditional keyboard commands seem to work (Command-W, Command-N, etc.).

DISCUSSION

If you enabled the Simple Finder option during or after the install, keyboard commands, among other things, are disabled. This is a feature introduced with Mac OS 8. To undo this option, go to the Finder and select Preferences from the Edit menu. Uncheck the Simple Finder option and close the Preferences window. This will re-enable features disabled by Simple Finder.

The following are disabled when Simple Finder is active:

    • get info (including setting up sharing)
    • label
    • add to favorites
    • make alias or show an original
    • put away a desktop item
    • print from the Finder
    • select all items
    • get to the clipboard
    • make pop-up windows
    • clean up, arrange or sort items in a view
    • access view options
    • erase a disk
    • sleep or restart
    • Command keys are not displayed in the menus and do not work for those items present. Command keys also do not function for commands that have been removed
    • Pop-up windows and context menus are not available
    • Folders that are being viewed as pop-up windows return to windows
    • Settings in Preferences and View Options remains persistent when switching between short and long menus
