TOPIC

After installing Mac OS 8.5, I noticed a new folder named "Printing Plug-ins" in my Extensions folder. What is this folder for?

DISCUSSION

This is a new addition in LaserWriter 8.6, which is included in Mac OS 8.5. The Printing Plug-ins folder is created in the Extensions folder once a LaserWriter has been configured with LaserWriter 8.6.

The Printing Plug-ins folder is for plug-in converter modules that convert certain types of documents into PostScript language output. These plug-ins allow you to print certain types of documents simply by dragging them onto your desktop printer icon.

LaserWriter 8.6 does not ship with any plug-ins in the Printer Plug-ins folder; however, it has built-in plug-ins for the following types of documents:

    - PostScript
    - EPS
    - JPEG
    - PICT

Developers may create additional plug-ins, which go into the Printing Plug-ins folder.
