TOPIC

This article provides information on the Multilingual Internet Access and Language Kit Updater included with Mac OS 8.5.

DISCUSSION

    Multilingual Internet Access

Multilingual Internet Access is an optionally installable component with Mac OS 8.5. It provides some of the previous features of Apple's Language Kits, including reading Web pages on the Internet. The language scripts supported are Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Japanese.

Multilingual Internet Access does *not* replace Apple's Language Kits:

    * In most cases, Multilingual Internet Access only includes one font for each of the language scripts. The Apple Language Kits include multiple fonts per language script.

    * The 2-byte input methods for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Japanese are not included, therefore text input is not possible in those languages without the use of language kits. Although text input is possible using the 1-byte language scripts, Apple will not be supporting this, due to the limited fonts included with Multilingual Internet Access.

Please see the Read Me "About Multilingual Internet Access" for more information.

Language Kit Updater for Mac OS 8.5

You must install the Language Kit Updater for Mac OS 8.5 (LKU8.5) in the following circumstances:

    * After upgrading to Mac OS 8.5 from an earlier version of the Mac OS, with Language Kits already installed.

    * Every time you install or remove one or more of the the following current Language Kits:

    Arabic Language Kit 1.0.1

    Chinese Language Kit 2.0, 1.2

    Cyrillic Language Kit 1.0

    Hebrew Language Kit 1.0.1

    Indian Language Kit 1.0

    Japanese Language Kit 1.2

    Korean Language Kit 1.0

    * If you custom remove a language kit or part (or all) of Multilingual Internet Access, you may also remove some files needed by your remaining language kits or Multilingual Internet Access language scripts. This is because of shared files. If this should occur, it is recommended that you reinstall either the language kit or the Multilingual Internet Access language script which does not work properly, after the custom removal. Again, remember to install the LKU8.5 each time a language kit is installed.

    * Since LKU8.5 will update any of the above listed Apple Language Kits, there is no required order for the installation of multiple language kits, as long as the Language Kit Updater 8.5 is installed last.

The LKU 8.5 is located in the Language Kit Update folder in the CD Extras folder on the Mac OS 8.5 CD. Also included is a Read Me with further information. Any attempt to use the LKU8.5 with previous versions of the above Language Kits is not supported and therefore not recommended.
