TOPIC

This article provides the specifications for FireWire ports used in Apple products.

DISCUSSION

FireWire ports are included with the following products:
    • Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White)
    • Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)
    • Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics)
    • Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
    • Power Mac G4 Cube
    • iMac DV
    • iMac (Summer 2000) See Notes 1 and 2.
    • PowerBook (FireWire)
    • PowerBook G4
    • iBook (FireWire)
    • iBook SE (FireWire)

Check the owners guide that came with your computer to learn if it is equipped with a FireWire port or ports.

    Data transfer speed
    100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and 400 Mbps

    Power
    Input voltage range: 8 to 33 V
Input power range: approximately 1 W
    Output voltage range: approximately 18 V to 24 V
Output power range: up to approximately 15 W

    Power safety
The FireWire bus has three self-resetting fuses. If your device unexpectedly shuts down, it may be due to an overloaded fuse. If this occurs, disconnect the device immediately.

    Repeater function
Built-in repeater functionality allows FireWire data to pass between the computer and external devices even when the computer is turned off. Power from devices with power supplies runs to the repeater through the FireWire cable. The repeater does not work with devices that do not supply power.

    Repeater functions between 8 V and 33 V and consumes approximately 1 W.

    FireWire Cables
You can purchase FireWire cables at many electronics stores. Depending on the manufacturer, they may be called IEEE 1394 cables or by another brand-specific name.

Cables come in many lengths. Standard lengths are 70 cm, 2 m, and 4.5 m. Cables come with 4-pin or 6-pin connectors.

Figure 2 6-pin 1394 (FireWire) port and connector

Warning : Do not attempt to force a 4-pin connector into a 6-pin port on a device. 4-pin ports are sometimes fragile. Before connecting a 4-pin plug to its port, align them carefully and do not force them together. Some connectors lock onto the port. To disconnect a locking connector, pinch its sides before pulling on it.

    Notes
      1. The parenthetical product description (Summer 2000) refers to the summer of the Northern Hemisphere.
      2. The Indigo iMac (Summer 2000) computer with a 350 MHz microprocessor does not include FireWire ports.
      3. Cables with 6-pin connectors carry power and data from one device to another. Four-pin cables carry data only. Before purchasing cables, check which kind of plug the device uses. The computer's FireWire port only accommodates 6-pin connectors although the following types of cables are available:
      • 6-pin to 6-pin connector cables
      • 4-pin to 4-pin connector cables
      • 6-pin to 4-pin connector cables
