DISCUSSION Using Apple Network Assistant to Install Mac OS 8.5 If you have Apple Network Assistant installed on the workstations on your network, you can use it to install Mac OS 8.5 software on those workstations using the NA 3.5 Remote Install 8.5 file. This document explains how to do this. To install Mac OS 8.5 using NA 3.5 Remote Install 8.5, follow these steps: 1. Copy the Mac OS 8.5 CD to an AppleShare server volume, then set up the folder that's created to allow guest access. 2. Open Mac OS Install and create a selection set of the software to install.Save the selection set in the Mac OS 8.5 CD folder. 3. Remove the Mac OS Install file from the Mac OS 8.5 CD folder. 4. Copy the NA 3.5 Remote Install 8.5 file to the Mac OS 8.5 CD folder. 5. On your administrator workstation, open Network Assistant. In the Workstation Status window, select the workstations where you want to install the software. 6. Log in as a guest to the AppleShare file server and connect to the volume that contains the Mac OS 8.5 CD folder. 7. Create an alias on the server for the NA 3.5 Remote Install 8.5 file (which is in the Mac OS 8.5 CD folder.) 8. Drag the alias to one of the workstations selected in the Workstation Status window. In the dialog box that appears, click the "Copy and Open" button. Network Assistant copies the alias to all the selected workstations and opens it. When the alias opens, NA 3.5 Remote Install 8.5 installs the software in the selection set on the workstations. Installation takes several minutes. When installation finishes, the workstations restart automatically. 9. After the workstations restart, use Network Assistant's Software Search command to remove from the workstations the alias for the NA 3.5 Remote Install 8.5 and the Installer Log file. You can also delete the Mac OS 8.5 CD folder from the server. |
