TOPIC This article details the method to run DiskFirstAid.app to repair Mac OS Extended format (also known as HFS Plus) file systems.
DISCUSSION If the computer has an abnormal shutdown you should first check all file systems that are attached to the computer. For more information on how to repair the UFS filesystems, please see article 24501: " Mac OS X Server: Why, When, and How to Run fsck for File System Maintenance " Mac OS X Server comes with a program named DiskFirstAid.app that can be used to repair an Mac OS Extended format file system. The program is started from the Workspace Manager by selecting it from the Apple Menu under Server Administration. When the program starts, you simply select the file system graphically and then choose either Verify or Repair. The most common difficulty that is encountered when running DiskFirstAid.app is that an error message appears stating that the file system could not be unmounted because files are open. If you get this error, make sure you quit all active applications and then use the Remote Admin to stop the Apple File Server. At this point you should be able to successfully run DiskFirstAid.app and then restart the services you shut down.
