TOPIC

Where is the reset button for iBook and what function does it perform?

DISCUSSION

The hardware reset button is located above the power button, shown in Figure 1. Its function is to force the computer to shut down if the computer is not responsive to keyboard and trackpad input. Before performing a hardware reset, try a soft reset documented in steps one and two.

    1. Restart the computer by pressing and then releasing the Ctrl-Command-Power keys.

    2. If the reset key sequence does not work, hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release. The computer will shut down. Press on the power-on button to restart the computer.

    3. Only if the above two procedures fail to restart your iBook should you use the Reset button. Activate the reset button by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small reset hole and gently pressing the switch once.

Pressing the reset button will reset the iBook hardware, including NVRAM, and force the computer to shut down. The reset procedure should only be used in a situation where your iBook is not responsive to keyboard or trackpad input and appears to be in a frozen state.

Note: Invoking the hardware reset will cause any unsaved data to be lost, as well as resetting the system date to 1904. This occurs whether the iBook is running from battery or AC power.
