TOPIC

When connecting to an AppleShare file server through the Chooser, the option to save your name and password is dimmed. This condition only occurs on a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), iBook, or iMac (Slot Loading) computer with Mac OS 8.6 and AppleShare client version 3.8.4 .

This article descirbes this issue in detail and provides two workarounds.

DISCUSSION

In the Chooser window that reads: "Select the items you want to use:" there is a checkbox to the right of every available volume. When you click the checkbox for any volume, you are given the options to save your name, or save your name and password, as shown in Figure 1. These options save your user log-on information so you do not have to re-enter it each time you automatically connect to the server at system startup time.

Note: The AppleShare file server administrator must allow users to save their names and passwords for that option to be available.

When using Mac OS 8.6 and AppleShare client version 3.8.4, the second option is "Save My Name and Password in the Keychain" as shown in Figure 2. The name and password option was changed in anticipation of Mac OS 9, but because the Keychain is not installed with Mac OS 8.6, the option to save your name and password is dimmed.

There are two possible solutions for this issue:

      1. Install an earlier version of the AppleShare client software. Version 3.8.3, for example, is available for download from the Apple Software Updates Web site at http://www.apple.com/swupdates .

      2. Upgrade to Mac OS 9.
