TOPIC

When booted from the Mac OS 9 CD, my iBook with 32 MB (megabytes) of RAM (random-access memory) does not see the network. Why is this?

DISCUSSION

32 MB is not enough memory for the iBook to run diagnostic and utility applications included on the CD and load the extensions needed for network services. To conserve memory, networking extensions are disabled to free up memory for those utility applications on the CD.

Note: Virtual memory cannot be enabled when the iBook is started from a CD.

When started up from the Mac OS 9 CD you will get an error when opening the AppleTalk control panel, choosing AppleShare in the Chooser, or opening the Network Browser.

If you need to have network access while your iBook is started from CD, start up from the Mac OS 8.6 iBook CD, or upgrade to 64 MB of memory.
