DISCUSSION

    iMac DVD Update 1.0

iMac DVD Update 1.0 places new firmware on the DVD-ROM shipped in iMac DV and iMac DV Special Edition computers. This update improves the ability of iMac DV models to read certain CD-ROM discs and to determine if a disc is unreadable.

Certain CD-ROM discs are created in a way that makes them difficult to read. Some iMac DV and iMac DV Special Edition computers will try to read these discs for a very long time. During this time, the iMac will not respond to mouse or keyboard input. The iMac DVD-ROM Update improves the DVD-ROM drive's ability to read some of these CDs and to determine more quickly whether a disc can be read.

    Installation Requirements

iMac DV or iMac DV Special Edition with internal DVD-ROM drive.

    Installing the iMac DVD-ROM Update

To install the iMac DVD-ROM Update, follow these steps:

      1. Copy the iMac DVD-ROM Update application to your hard disk.

      2. Save all open documents and quit all applications.

      3. If a CD or DVD disc is in the DVD-ROM drive, drag its icon to the Trash.

      4. Double-click the iMac DVD-ROM Update application to open it.

      5. Click Continue.

When the update has been installed, your computer restarts. If the installation doesn't work, see the Tips and Troubleshooting section of this document.

IMPORTANT Do not reset, shut down, or turn off power to your computer while the iMac DVD-ROM Update is in progress. Doing so may damage your DVD-ROM drive.

    Tips and Troubleshooting

If the iMac DVD Update isn't installed successfully, you see one of the following messages.

    • "This update is not necessary."
    • "The drive has already been updated."
    • "This update is not intended for this DVD-ROM drive model or firmware revision."

The DVD-ROM drive in your iMac does not need the iMac DVD Update.

    • "This DVD-ROM drive cannot be updated."

The DVD-ROM drive model in your iMac is of a type that cannot be updated. If your iMac DV computer has problems reading CD-ROM discs that can be read on other Macintosh computers, contact Apple or an Apple-authorized service provider for assistance. If your iMac DV computer can read most CDs, your DVD-ROM drive is operating correctly and you don't need this update.
