TOPIC

This article documents the maximum number of powered and unpowered FireWire devices you can use with the PowerBook (FireWire), PowerBook G4, and iBook (FireWire).

DISCUSSION

    Powered FireWire Devices

The PowerBook (FireWire), PowerBook G4, and iBook (FireWire) support a maximum of 63 powered FireWire devices. You can connect a maximum of 16 FireWire devices in one chain. Refer to the FireWire section of Mac Help for additional information on connecting FireWire devices to your computer.

    Unpowered FireWire Devices

The PowerBook (FireWire), PowerBook G4, and iBook (FireWire) provide 6 watts of power to the FireWire port. This is enough to support one unpowered FireWire device. Because a non-powered FireWire device gets its power from the computer, battery life is affected. You may wish to be connected to AC power when using an unpowered FireWire device.
