Drive Mechanisms Many unusually sized and shaped optical media are available. The drive mechanism in your computer determines whether it can accept discs of a nonstandard size and shape. The table below provides a summary.
Some of the computers that use a slot-loading CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive mechanism include: Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) computers have been manufactured with two different drive mechanisms: slotted tray and flat carrier tray. For more information on identifying the drive in your Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) computer, please see article 31161: " Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics): DVD-RAM Drive Differences " Standard size and shape disc The 77mm and 120 mm round discs are the only size and shape that work with slot loading or slotted tray CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. See Figures 1 and 2. Figure 1 120 mm disc Figure 2 77 mm round disc Nonstandard size and shape discs Discs of the following sizes and shapes work only with drives that employ a flat carrier tray (such as certain Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) computers. The discs do not work with slot loading CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives. See Figure 3. Figure 3 Nonstandard disc shapes Warning: Inserting a nonstandard sized or shaped disc into a drive that is not designed to accommodate it may damage the drive. Notes:
