The Mac OS X Public Beta installer cannot locate ATA hard drives on the second ATA controller if the DVD-RAM drive on the first controller is configured as a slave.

Symptom

You are unable to install Mac OS X Public Beta onto an ATA hard drive on the second controller.

Products affected

Power Macintosh G3 and Power Mac G4 computers with two ATA controllers. The DVD-RAM drive is alone on the first controller and configured as a slave. The target hard drive is on the second controller and is configured as master.

Solution

Reconfigure the DVD-RAM drive as Master.
