DISCUSSION
If your Mac OS X Server computer does not have a connection to the Internet you must perform the following file transfers on another computer that does have a connection, and then copy them to your server computer.
If your Mac OS X Server computer does have an Internet connection follow these steps:
Using OmniWeb
1. Log in to the server as Administrator (or root).
2. Open the OmniWeb browser (/Local/Applications/Internet/OmniWeb.app).
3. Select the folder from the following directory; it contains the update you need:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/
English-North_American/Mac_OS_X_Server/
4. Command-click the appropriate.tar file and click OK in the dialog box that appears. This saves the file into your download directory (~/Library/OmniWeb/Downloads/)
5. In a Viewer Window go to the ~/Library/OmniWeb/Downloads/ directory. The easiest way to navigate to this directory is to type a ~ and press the Return key, then follow the directory structure down.
6. Single click the .tar and press Command+2. This opens the Contents Inspector. Click the Unarchive button and the tar file will be expanded in the current directory.
7. Using the Viewer in WorkSpaceManager, select the .pkg file. Then under the Tools menu choose Inspector/Tools. Make sure that "Installer" is the application selected to open this package.
(
Note
: The file name is the name of the component you have downloaded with the extension.pkg such as MacOSXServer.1.0.2.pkg . For the remainder of this article it will be referred to as .pkg).
8. Close the Inspector and double click the package to start the installer. This opens Installer.app. Click on the "Install" button to perform the installation. You are asked if you want to replace existing files; answer "Continue" to this question.
9. Shut down the computer by choosing Log Out from the File Menu and clicking Shutdown in the dialog box that appears.
10. Start the computer normally and the updated components are ready for use.
Using the command line
1. Log in as Administrator (or root)
2. Open Terminal.app
3. Download the updates for Mac_OS_X_Serer_OS from Apple's ftp server using the following commands:
ftp ftp.info.apple.com (Log in as "anonymous" and give your email address as password)
bin
cd Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Mac_OS_X_Server/Mac_OS_X_Server_OS
get <insert name here>.pkg.tar
quit
Replace the string <insert name here> with the actual file name.
Note
: To download files for other components of Mac OS X Server change Mac_OS_X_Server_OS to the appropriate folder such as QuickTime_Streaming_Server/ for QTSS
4. At this point the update will be in the home directory of the Administrator user. Keep a copy of this file in case you need it in the future. Type the following command to make a temporary copy of the update to work with: cp <insert name here>.pkg.tar /tmp
5. In the Viewer, go to the /tmp directory and single click the .pkg.tar and press Command+2. This will open the Contents Inspector. Click the Unarchive button and the tar file will be expanded in the current directory.
6. Using the Viewer in WorkSpaceManager, select the .pkg and then under the Tools menu, choose Inspector/Tools. Make certain that "Installer" is the application selected to open this package. Then install the software update by opening the package by double clicking it. This will open Installer.app. Click on the Install button to perform the installation. You will be asked if you want to replace existing files, answer "Continue" to this question.
7. Shutdown the computer by choosing Log Out from the File Menu and clicking the Shutdown button in the dialog box that appears.
8. Start the computer normally and the updated components will be ready for use.
