TOPIC

If the files you download from the Apple Software Downloads site seem damaged, use a standalone Web browser instead of the America Online built-in Web browser.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

After downloading a file with America Online's built-in Web browser, it won't open. In some cases, an alert box appears with a -39 error message.

    Products affected

    • America Online built-in Web browser

    Solution

Use a stand-alone Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator. America Online software version 3.0 and later allows you to run a stand-alone Web browser.

Netscape reports that America Online's built-in browser may not allow you to download files that exceed 12.4MB.

Follow these steps to use a standalone Web browser with America Online software version 3.0 and later:

    • Connect to America Online as you normally do.
    • Open a standalone Web browser. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator are available in the Internet folder on computers that came pre-installed with Mac OS 8.5 or later.
    • It may be helpful to select "Hide America Online" from the Applications menu at the top far right of the screen.
    • Connect to http://www.apple.com/swupdates .

Internet Explorer is available at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ and Netscape Communicator is available at http://www.netscape.com/download/ .
