TOPIC

Configuring the Apple menu in Mac OS X Server is similar to Mac OS 8, but it does have some new features and procedures. This article discusses customizing the Apple menu.

DISCUSSION

    Configuring the Apple Menu

The Apple menu appears in the upper left-hand corner of the monitor. Anything can be placed in the Apple menu to make items easier to open. Individual users can configure their own Apple menu.

The AppleMenuOptions application is located in the following path: /System/Applications/AppleMenuOptions.app. This application is used to configure everything about the Apple menu.

When the AppleMenuOptions.app is opened, there are two tabs present at the top of the window, "Organize" and "Recents."

    The Organize Tab

The Organize tab is used to configure the overall order of the items in the Apple menu. At the bottom of this panel are several buttons.

The first button is titled "Default." This button restores the Apple menu to its factory configuration.

The "New Submenu" button creates a new submenu in the Apple menu. A submenu has a folder icon with an arrow to the left of its title. When a submenu is highlighted, the items in the submenu appear to the right of the Apple menu. Items are added to a submenu by highlighting the submenu in the "Organize" tab, and then clicking the "Add Item..." button.

The "New Separator" button is used to add a line between two items that appear in the Apple menu. In the default configuration, two separators are used to isolate the Mac OS item in the Apple menu. These are useful for organizing items in the menu.

The "Add Item..." button was briefly discussed above. It can be used to add items to the main Apple menu, or to a submenu. When this button is clicked it brings up a navigation window. You add an item by browsing the filesystem and locating the item to be added to the Apple menu and double clicking on it. You may also type in the full path for the item you wish to add. Clicking "OK" will add the selected item to the Apple menu.

The "Edit Item..." button is used to edit the name, location, or icon of a previously existing item.

Items in the menu can be reordered by simply clicking on them and dragging them to the new location.

To remove a menu item, select it by clicking on it, and then click the "Remove" button.

    The Recents Tab

The Recents tab can be configured to keep track of recently used applications and documents.

Under the "Show Last" field you may select how many previously used applications or documents the operating system will keep track of. The maximum number is 99.

Also on this tab is a pop up menu titled "Recent:." By choosing "Applications" or "Documents" you can see, in list view, the previously opened applications or documents. You may delete an item from this list by clicking on it and then clicking the "Remove" button.

    Restoring Default Settings

The default settings for the Apple menu can be restored by clicking on the "Default" button found on the Organize tab. If this does not work, it is possible to delete the preferences file manually. To do so, you must be logged in as root. The preferences file is located in a given user's home directory in the following path: ~/.OpenStep/AppleMenu/NSAppleMenu.appleMenuDomain . Note : In Mac OS X Server the ~ symbol refers to the currently logged in user's home directory.
