TOPIC

After installing and configuring Mac OS X Server, the computer may experience a significant delay at the Starting NetInfo section of the boot process.

DISCUSSION

If your Mac OS X Server was set up to look for a NetInfo network or NetInfo server on startup, a delay of up to two minutes could occur if no NetInfo resources are available. After a timeout period, you can continue starting up by pressing the c key. For faster startup times you should turn off the option to use a NetInfo network server. You do this by opening the Preferences.app and selecting Network. Once the Network window has opened, click the NetInfo tab. In this pane there is only one checkbox. Uncheck this box, and the computer no longer tries to find a NetInfo network server at startup.

This delay could also be caused be improperly shutting down the computer. When this happens the information in the NetInfo database must be verified during startup. If a large NetInfo database is present the consistency check may take up to 20 minutes. Once the consistancy check is complete, the computer starts up properly.
