TOPIC

This article describes the configuration and setup of Apple Files Services under Mac OS X Server.

DISCUSSION

Apple File Services depends upon the Mac OS X Setup Assistant to configure basic setup information, including:
    • AppleTalk Name
    • Whether Apple File Services is enabled
    • Whether Apache Web server is enabled
    • Whether AppleTalk and TCP/IP is enabled

After initial setup, these settings, as well a users, groups, and sharing for Apple File Services, are configured using Remote Administration. For help setting up and using Remote Administration, please see:

Article 60063: " Mac OS X Server: Using Apple File Services Remote Administration "

Both Apple File Services and Apache must be enabled.

Even if you only select Apple File Services, the Apache Web server will be launched on startup since it is required for Remote Administration.

If Apple File Services is enabled with the Setup Assistant, an entry is made in the file /private/etc/hostconfig. This causes RemoteAdmin to launch. When Remote Admin launches, it looks for the "autostart" flag in the NetInfo database. If this flag is either missing or set to true, Remote Admin opens AppleFileServer. The only condition that would cause the File Server not to start up is if this flag is set to false. This requires changing the setting in Remote Administration.
