TOPIC

Macintosh Management software provides the means for easy administration of Macintosh computers in a variety of environments, while offering users the privacy of their own personal workspace.

DISCUSSION

The software provides desktop security by controlling which network and system resources users can access. Administrators can protect the System Folder and Applications folder.

Options can be set to promote password security, startup security, and that prevent users from reconfiguring the system or using unauthorized applications.

User accounts and workgroups can be managed from any computer connected to the server. Once the network is set up, there is very little daily management.

In school environments, teachers can distribute and collect assignments through the network. A teacher can also make available network resources, applications, and CDs that promote teaching objectives for his or her class.

To simplify maintenance, Macintosh Management stores the settings defined by the system administrator in one location accessible by all the computers on the network.

Macintosh Management requires an Apple File Protocol (AFP) server that is also running Macintosh Management server software for the storage of its databases. All the computers using Macintosh Management software must be connected to a network.

The maintenance of the data is handled by an administration application called Macintosh Manager. The application can reside on any Macintosh computer on the network including the NetBoot server. The Macintosh Management software can also control the administration workstation, but this is not a requirement.

The workstations require software that enforces the controls set forth by the administration program. This software is known as the client software.

At a minimum, a working configuration contains one AFP server, one Client/Admin workstation on an Ethernet network.
