    Apple Help 1.2
    Improvements in Apple Guide 2.4 and Help Viewer 1.2 provide additional support for opening HTML help files with Help Viewer and use of QuickTime and HTML 3.2 standard in HTML files.

    Apple System Profiler 2.2
    Provides additional information and corrects a number of errors from earlier versions of Apple System Profiler.

    AppleScript 1.3.7
    Provides a number of bug fixes and enhancements for scripting developers.

    AppleShare Client 3.8.3
    Provides support for third-party User Authentication Modules (UAM) and improves Navigation Services support in the client.

    ColorSync 2.6.1
    Enhancements include a newly designed control panel and support for additional file formats for JPEG and GIF.

    Desktop Printer Utility 1.2
    Allows you to create desktop printers for PostScript printers connected via USB or LPR using TCP/IP.

    Disk Copy 6.3.3
    Adds support for Imation (third-party) SuperDisk and Appearance Manager progress bars.

    DVD-RAM disk
    Provides support for using DVD-RAM disks for storage of computer data.

    English Speech Recognition 1.5.4
    Adds speech recognition support for 44.1 kHz sound input used on iMac and other Macintosh systems.

    FireWire 2.0
    Enhancements include improved video recording quality to DV devices and new services that enable the use of FireWire disk drives, printers, and other new devices.

    Game Sprockets 1.1.4
    Mac OS 8.6 now includes the Apple Game Sprockets libraries to support game applications.

    Internet Access 1.3.1
    Internet Access includes latest versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook software as well as updated Aladdin utilities.
    Note: The update install of Mac OS 8.6 does not include Internet Access 1.3.1.

    Keyboard 8.2
    Provides additional keyboard layouts to support DVORAK keyboards.

    LaserWriter 8.6.5
    Provides support for secure printing using AppleShare IP 6.1, supports USB-connected PostScript printers, and provides print history logging and TrueType over Type 1 font selection.

    Mac OS Runtime for Java 2.1.1
    Offers greatly increased performance over version 2.0, improved reliability, and support for AppleScript and Sun's JFC/Swing.

    Nanokernel
    Integrates multitasking and multiprocessing facilities to improve system performance and significantly increase CPU power savings.
    Note : The Nanokernel is built into the core system software and is not a separately installed component.

    Open Transport 2.0.3
    Correct issues with printing large files, printing to GCC and HP Laserjet printers, and issues with DHCP implementation affecting cable modem users.
    Multiprocessing API Library
    Several new features have been added to provide increased stability and performance of multiprocessor computer systems.

    PowerBook Security
    Password Security has been enhanced to include ownership information when presented with the password request window.

    Sherlock 2.1
    Enhancements include a resizeable Internet search panel and button to uncheck all plug-ins as well as proxy/firewall support.

    Startup Disk 7.7.3
    Startup Disk control panel now displays a "Network Disk" icon that a user can select in order to boot from a network (on compatible systems).

    Unicode (ATSUI) Enhancements
    Provides enhancements that benefit software developers and improve client control of fonts.

    URLAccess
    Allows developers to quickly add Internet-enabled capabilities to their software to allow clients to download or upload data from or to the Internet.

    Additional Enhancements
    • Some PowerBooks would lose the icons of the main drive's window after the hard drive spun down and awakened.
    • When copying files from a Sherlock window to a folder containing some of the files being copied, Sherlock would delete them before copying. Sherlock would then fail to copy the files because the source file had been deleted.
    • A crash could occur in the Finder when attempting to use an alias to a file referring to an item in which the item's volume state had been changed from mounted to unmounted.
