TOPIC Apple and RoadRunner (www.rr.com) have received reports of a particular connectivity issue between Mac OS 8.5.x clients and the DHCP/user authentication system used in some areas of RoadRunner's cable modem service. While the majority of customers are not affected, Apple and RoadRunner have been working together to resolve the issue. DISCUSSION Issue From time to time, the cable modem connection refuses to connect and all IP services are lost. At this time a -3259 (timeout) error may occur. Upon subsequent restarts, the TCP/IP control panel may show an IP address in the 169.254.x.x range. Resolution Upgrading to Mac OS 8.6 resolves most of this problem. Apple has changed the DHCP client behavior in Mac OS 8.6 to work better with a larger variety of systems, including those used by RoadRunner. However, the problem may still occur on occasions where the DHCP server-assigned IP address changes between restarts. RoadRunner is expected to update their systems to resolve this issue. Customers with this issue should update to Mac OS 8.6. |
