DISCUSSION

Adding a filter effect to a clip

To add a filter effect to a single clip:
      1. Decide whether to apply the filter to the clip in the Browser or the Timeline. When applied to a clip opened from the Browser, the filter affects all instances of that clip's use subsequently. (It does not affect instances of the clip already in a sequence.) When applied to a clip in the Timeline, the filter affects only that copy of the clip in that sequence.
      2. Do one of the following:
      • Drag the filter from the Browser's Effects tab to the clip in the Timeline.
      • Select the clip in the Timeline and choose the filter by name from the Effects menu.
      • Double-click the clip in the Browser to open it in the Viewer, then choose the filter by name from the Effects menu.

The filter effect is displayed on the image or sound. (If you applied the effect in the Timeline and the clip is not showing in the Canvas, position the playhead over the clip in the Timeline.)

Adding a filter to part of a clip or a range of clips

You can apply a filter so that it covers a portion of a single clip or so that it covers a range across multiple clips.

To add a filter to part of a clip:
      1. Select the Range Selection tool in the Tool Palette.
      2. In the Timeline, drag across part of a clip.
      3. Open the Effects menu and choose Video Filters or Audio Filters, then choose the filter you want from the two submenus.
      4. Position the playhead over the part of the clip to which you applied the filter to see the effect.

To add a filter effect to a range of clips:
      1. Select the Range Selection tool in the Tool Palette.
      2. In the Timeline, drag across a group of clips. You can select whole or partial clips at the right and left edges of your selection.
      3. Open the Effects menu and choose Video Filters or Audio Filters, then choose the filter you want from the two submenus. When you apply a filter to a range of clips, Final Cut Pro adds a copy of the filter to each clip.
      4. Position the playhead over the area to which you applied the filter to see the effect.

    Editing filters

To edit an effect, do one of the following:
      1. In the Timeline, double-click a clip to which you've added a filter to open it in the Viewer.
      2. Click the Filters tab in the Viewer.
      3. Adjust the parameters you want to change. (The items you can change vary according to the type of filter.)

To see the changes you've made, use the arrow keys to move through the clip frame by frame. You must render the clip before you can play it with a video filter applied.

You can use keyframes to make additional changes in a filter over time.

    Locating filters

You can use the Timeline to see where filters are applied in a sequence.

To see where filters are applied in the Timeline:
    • Click the Clip Keyframes button at the lower-left corner of the Timeline window to show or hide bars indicating where filters and motion keyframes are applied to clips. The upper bar (green) indicates filters; the lower bar (blue) indicates motion effects.

For more information about using filters, see "Using Video Filters" in Chapter 12 of the "Final Cut Pro User's Manual."
