About the Applications HD disk image
The NetBoot HD and Applications HD volumes that you see when you log in to a NetBoot client computer are read-only disk images that contain the system software and application software that you use on a NetBoot client computer.
By using NetBoot Desktop Admin 1.1, you can increase the size of the disk images. However, you can only increase the size of the original Applications HD disk image to 512 MB total, which may not be sufficient if you need to install many applications. You can increase this new version of the Application HD disk image up to 2 GB. It is strongly recommended you use the new version before installing new software.
To use the new Applications HD disk image, you must install the new one and replace the old one with it. The Applications HD disk is located on the NetBoot server as a file named Applications HD.img.
Note: Because you will be working with two files with the same name, you may need to distinguish them by using their creation dates. To see the creation date, select the file, open the File menu and choose Get Info. The orginal Applications HD.img file was created on Friday, March 5, 1999.
Installing the new Applications HD disk image
To install the new Applications HD disk image and replace the old one:
1. Log in to a NetBoot client computer as a user with Global Administrator privileges that is a member of the System Access workgroup.
2. Using an Internet browser go to the Web site (www.apple.com/swupdates/) and download all of the files for the replacement Applications HD to the NetBoot HD disk.
3. Mount the NetBoot server as a user with Administrator privileges.
4. Double-click the first file in the series of Replacement Applications HD files. This file is the one with .smi at the end of the name.
Doing this merges the four files. When this finishes, the Replacement Applications HD disk image appears on the desktop.
5. Open the Replacement Applications HD disk image and copy the Applications HD.img file to the NetBoot server disk.
6. Double-click the copy of the Applications HD.img file on the server.
Another Applications HD disk image appears on the desktop.
7. Double-click the original Applications HD disk image on the NetBoot client and drag all of the contents to the new Applications HD disk image.
8. Open the NetBoot server and locate the folder with the same name as the server and _NBS at the end. Open this folder, then open the Shared Images folder inside it.
The Shared Images folder contains the original Applications HD.img file, as well as the NetBoot HD.img file, the Mac OS ROM file, and possibly other folders.
9. If you do not see a folder named Delete Me in the Shared Images folder, create a folder and change its name to Delete Me.
10. Drag the original Applications HD.img file to the Delete Me folder. (This file was created March 5, 1999.)
Important
: The Mac OS X Server deletes the contents of the Delete Me folder periodically. Make sure you no longer need any items you place in the Delete Me folder.
11. Move the new Applications HD.img file from the NetBoot server disk to the Shared Images folder.
12. Lock the new Applications HD.img file.
To lock the file, select it, open the File menu and choose Get Info. Click the Locked check box and close the window.
NetBoot client computers will use the new Applications HD image file the next time they start up, and you can use NetBoot Desktop Admin 1.1 to resize it up to 2GB.
