DISCUSSION

About the ARA 3.0.2 Client Updater

    Important Note

Apple Remote Access Client 3.1.2 (which is included as part of Mac OS 8.5) and Apple Remote Access Client 3.1.3 (which is included as part of Mac OS 8.6) include the fixes that the ARA 3.0.2 Client Updater installs as well as additional enhancements. Apple strongly encourages upgrading to the latest version of system software whenever possible. The ARA 3.0.2 Client Updater is being released primarily to address two specific situations:

      1. Mac OS 8.5 and beyond require a PowerPC processor, therefore computers with Motorola 68K processors cannot take advantage of the upgrade to Mac OS 8.5.
      2. Some internal support organizations determine when system software upgrades are to be rolled out to their user community or, certain software must be updated to be compatible with the latest release of the operating system, therefore these customers are unable to upgrade to Mac OS 8.5 or later at this time.

    What the Updater Does

The ARA 3.0.2 Client Updater fixes the issues described below. Apple recommends that customers use this utility to update the ARA 3.0 or 3.0.1 Client if the following statements are true:
    • You are using Apple Remote Access Client 3.0 or 3.0.1.
    • The Macintosh is running system software prior to Mac OS 8.5.

    AppleTalk Network Access Interruption

On certain networks a Macintosh connected to a Local Area Network (LAN) periodically get a message stating "Access to your AppleTalk Network has been interrupted." In some cases AppleTalk services become available again, in other cases the AppleTalk network does not become available again.

For additional detailed information, please refer to the following article:

Article 24549: "ARA 3.0: ' AppleTalk Network Not Available' Message. "

    G3 Sleep Issue

This applies only to Macintosh computers that use the G3 processor: If the computer has been in "Sleep" mode prior to attempting to make an ARA connection, the computer does not successfully connect to a remote access server using ARAP. The modem dials and establish a connection but the connection never gets beyond the status message which states "Starting ARAP..." The connection eventually times out with an alert. The connection attempt can also be terminated using the Cancel button.

Once the Macintosh has been put into sleep mode, it must be restarted in order to make ARAP connections. This does not occur with ARA 2.1.

Connections made via PPP work whether the Macintosh has been put to sleep or not.

Note: The G3 sleep issue is fixed in the ARA 3.0.1 Client.

    Incorrect Status Display

Several minor issues that would cause Remote Access status to display incorrect status information have been fixed. The most common symptom of these issues is that the status display would not get beyond the message, "Starting Network Protocols."

For additional information, please refer to the following article:

Article 22070: " ARA 3.0: 'Starting Network Protocols' Status Does Not Change. "

    Updating the ARA 3.0 Client

To update an ARA 3.0 Client, double click on the Update for ARA 3.0.2 Client icon. The updater searches for the appropriate files to update and list them in a window. Select either the file "OpenTpt Remote Access" or "OpenTpt Remote Access 68K" that resides in the Extensions folder inside the active System Folder and click on the Update button. If both the PPC and 68K files are present, the updater must be run twice, once for each file. After the update is complete the following message is displayed: "The file has been successfully updated." The final step is to quit the updater utility and restart the Macintosh.

In order to verify whether or not the ARA 3.0 Client has already been updated, open the Remote Access control panel and Get Info (using the Get Info command in the File menu). An updated client displays "Remote Access: 3.0.2" Any Remote Access files that are placed in the Trash by the updater can be deleted.
