This article describes an issue where the QuickTime installer fails to install QuickTime because of a VISEData error.

Symptom

When you try to install QuickTime, an alert box appears with one of these messages:

"An error occurred trying to download the file VISEData"

"The file 'viseicat.idx' couldn't be downloaded."

• QuickTime 4.1.x and later

Solution


• If the error occurs during the middle of the installation, you should be able to start it again. It will resume from where it left off.
• Macintosh users should be aware that this alert box can appear if certain system extensions or files are missing, or if there is an extensions conflict. Choose the "Mac OS All" extension set in the Extensions Manager control panel and restart the computer before attempting the installation. If any extensions that are part of this set are missing, reinstall the Mac OS before installing QuickTime.
• This alert can be caused by slow or dropped Internet connections. Be sure that your Internet connection is reliable and working correctly. You may also have more success installing QuickTime at times of lighter Internet traffic.
• In some cases the QuickTime Installer may try to use a proxy server. If your computer is not behind a firewall and doesn't need to use a proxy server, make sure the "Use Web Proxy" option is deselected.

These workarounds may not be effective for all users. You can also download the stand-alone QuickTime installer, from the QuickTime Web site ( http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone/ ).

Microsoft Windows Users

The stand-alone QuickTime installer for Windows is compressed as a ZIP archive. Once you have downloaded the file in this format, you must use a decompression program to 'UnZIP' the file.
