DISCUSSION About the Ultra2 SCSI Card 1.2 Firmware Update If your (blue and white) Power Macintosh G3 or Macintosh Server G3 came with a single channel Ultra2 low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI card, run the "2940U2B v1.2 Flash Utility" to install updated firmware on the card to increase performance and reduce compatibility issues when using large files. Hardware and Software Required You can use this utility with any (blue and white) Power Macintosh G3 or Macintosh Server G3 system that came with a single channel Ultra2 LVD SCSI expansion card and is running Mac OS 8.6. If you are uncertain whether your computer has this card installed, open the Apple System Profiler, which is under the Apple Menu. Click the "Devices and Volumes" tab and look at the "PCI" entry. If "Card type: scsi-2" and "Card name: ADPT, 2940U2B" appear, the card is installed. Installing the Firmware To install the firmware update, double click the installer icon "2940U2B v1.2 Flash Utility" and follow the instructions. Note: After you upgrade your firmware, it may be necessary to reselect your startup device in the Startup Disk Control Panel Important Do not attempt to update the card's firmware while running the Mac OS X Server operating system. For Macintosh Server G3 customers with Mac OS X Server bundled at the factory: Your server did not include a Mac OS 8.6 System Software installer. However, depending on what you selected to install with Mac OS X Server, a Mac OS 8.5 System Folder capable of booting your computer may be found on an HFS Plus volume after installing Mac OS X Server. You will need to update this System Folder to Mac OS 8.6 in order to proceed. If the Macintosh Server G3 or Power Macintosh G3 does not have an existing Mac OS 8.6 installation on an HFS Plus partition, still download the firmware update to an HFS Plus partition. The following steps may be used to boot into Mac OS 8.6 to apply the Firmware Update:
2. Open your HFS volume and locate the directory named "*_NBS", where "*" is your HFS volume name. 3. Open the SharedImages folder and double-click on NetBoot HD.img. 4. After the NetBoot HD.img has mounted, copy the System Folder to the root level of your HFS Plus (Mac OS Extended) partition. 5. Remove the MM Client Startup Extension from the newly copied System Folder and set the volume as the boot disk via the Startup Disk Control Panel. 6. Update the system software using the Mac OS 8.6 Updater. Notes: 1. After upgrading your firmware, it may be necessary to use the System Disk utility to return to Mac OS X Server because the Updater resets the computer's NVRAM. For information about using the System Disk utility, consult the following Knowledge Base article: Article 60143: " Mac OS X Server: Using the System Disk Program. " 2. Because the firmware update requires booting into the Mac OS, please read the following article: Article 60217: " Mac OS X Server: Choosing the Startup OS " If you are having difficulty booting into Mac OS 8.6 please consult the following article: Article 60153: " Mac OS X Server: Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) Won't Start Up With Mac OS 8.x " 3. Apple recommends removing the Mac OS System Folder on the HFS Plus partition after completing the firmware update process. |
