TOPIC

This article discribes how to change the name assigned to NetBoot clients.

DISCUSSION

You can change the first part of the name assigned to NetBoot computers by following the steps listed below. In this example, we will change the naming scheme from "Mac NC" to "Lab Mac," so the NetBoot computers will be called "Lab Mac 1", "Lab Mac 2", etc.

Important: This process involves making changes to the NetInfo database. Before making any changes, you should always backup your existing NetInfo database. Please see the following article for instructions on backing up the NetInfo database and other basic information about NetInfo:

Article 60038: " Mac OS X Server: What is NetInfo? "

    1. Shut down all the NetBoot clients.

    2. On the server, choose System Administration, NetInfoManger from the Apple Menu.

    3. Select the /users directory and delete all the "Mac NC" entries.

    4. Select the /machines directory and delete all the "macnc" entries.

Steps 3 and 4 are important because they prevent any conflict from arising between the new and the old name given to the NetBoot clients.

    5. Select /config/NetBootServer. Below is a picture of what the directory looks like:

    6. Edit the value for afp_user_format. Change "Mac NC" to the new name that is to be used for NetBoot clients. Important: do not delete #%d from the afp_user_format value. In this case we would enter "Lab Mac #%d".

    7. Restart the server.

    8. When the server has finished restarting, you may NetBoot the clients. They will now have the new names.
