About USB Adapter Card Support This document provides important information about USB Adapter Card Support. Apple's USB Adapter Card Support is a set of software extensions that provide support for USB PCI adapter cards installed in Macintosh computers. Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a new standard for connecting peripherals to Macintosh computers. The most common USB devices include but are not limited to: ink-jet and laser printers, digital still cameras, scanners, game pads, joysticks, keyboards and mice, storage devices and hubs. USB provides many advantages including the ability to hot plug and unplug devices without the need to shut down or restart the computer, support for up to 127 attached devices, and up to 12 Megabits per second throughput. This software will not install on Power Macintosh computers with USB ports built-in. Support for built-in USB ports and USB PCI adapter cards is already included in these systems. Requirements USB Adapter Card Support requires a Power Macintosh computer with PCI slots running Mac OS 8.5.1 or higher, and a USB PCI adapter card. IMPORTANT! This software supports only USB PCI Cards that comply with the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification and may not work with every USB adapter card. Contact the manufacturer of your USB adapter card if necessary, to verify that your card is OHCI compliant and supported by this software. Installing USB Adapter Card Support This section describes how to install USB Adapter Card Support. If you haven't already done so, install the USB PCI adapter card following the instructions provided by the manufacturer, then download the USB Adapter Card Support from the Apple Software Updates web site: http://www.apple.com/swupdates/ To install USB Adapter Card Support, follow these steps:
2. Choose "Recommended Installation" and click "Start" to install the USB Adapter Card Support software into the extensions folder of your startup disk. USB Adapter Card Support requires Mac OS 8.5.1 or later. 3. When the install is complete the installer will prompt you to restart your computer. 4. After your computer restarts, the USB Adapter Card Support software is ready for use. What is Installed USB Adapter Card Support installs the following extensions into your System Folder. Using USB Adapter Card Support After installing the USB PCI Card and the USB Adapter Card Support software, you can begin using USB devices. Follow the instructions for using the device provided by the manufacturer. Some devices require additional software to be installed before they will function properly. If the message "The software needed to use the USB device 'name of the device' can not be found" appears when you plug in a USB device, the device you are using requires additional software to be installed. Contact the device manufacturer to obtain the software required to operate the device. IMPORTANT Do not disconnect mass storage devices from the USB port while copying files to or from the device or while files or applications stored on the device are in use. DOING SO MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF DATA. Tips and Troubleshooting Some Macintosh G3 models may not wake from sleep correctly with this software installed. Use the Energy Saver control panel to set the system sleep to "never", or uninstall this software to avoid this issue. The Power key on the Apple USB Keyboard will only start up the computer when it is attached directly to a USB port built-into a Macintosh computer. It will not start up the computer when attached through a USB PCI adapter card. Although Apple's USB Adapter Card Software supports USB keyboards and mice, it is recommended that you use an ADB keyboard and mouse as your primary input devices. You may experience limited functionality using some USB keyboards and mice in certain applications, including Easy Access and the Keyboard control panel. If a USB device does not function after installing a USB PCI adapter card and this software, open Apple System Profiler and click the "Devices and Volumes" tab to view the names of attached USB devices. Verify that the device has been detected by locating its name in Apple System Profiler. If the device name does not appear, it has not been detected. Confirm that the device has been attached correctly to the USB adapter card and that the USB adapter card is firmly seated in the PCI slot. If the device still does not appear in the Apple System Profiler, contact the device manufacturer to determine if there is additional software required to operate the device.
